UPDATE: The Cat Lady of Sri Lanka - 29th January 2008

The situation has deteriorated for the Cat Lady. Hostilities with the neighbours has escalated. We have heard today that they have now brought more rubble and sand and closed a small entrance where the Cat Lady was squeezing her way in and out from. She is now completely enclosed in.

We have arranged for people to take her food and supplies, but these visitors are now being threatened and chased away by the neighbours who have become very jealous that this poor lady is being helped by outsiders.

Because of the situation, a leading Human Rights Lawyer was called in and she visited the Cat Lady but was also threatened by the neighbours. She will be taking up her cause and has warned the neighbours that if any harm should befall the Cat Lady, she will take action against them. She will be speaking to other lawyers about the case. It seems the police do not want to assist and the Cat Lady is afraid of being evicted if they become involved.

We have explored renting a place for the Cat Lady, but due to the stigma attached to her skin condition Vitiligo, few people would be willing to rent to her. The Lawyer is looking into the possibility of renting some land and a small dwelling nearby and if this is possible, we will fund this arrangement.

Meanwhile there are three Land Monitors in the enclosed area endangering the lives of her animals. Two flea and tick ridden pups were taken by the lawyer-both were unwell with possible tick fever, and were taken to the vets. We have no further news to date about them. People dump animals near the Cat Lady and these 2 pups were recently found by her.

Before recent events, we have started to neuter/spay some of the cats with the funds raised, but the Cat Lady is worried about leaving her animals because of the Land Monitors, so we have sent further funds for a large cage for the cats to protect them from the predators. Funds have also been sent for a full health check for the Cat Lady as well as clothes, food and other supplies.

A pair of Wellington boots are also on their way to Sri Lanka for the Cat Lady as she has requested these because her feet are swollen and sore from walking in the polluted water.

The situation is now desperate and we still do not have enough funds for a refuge and clinic.

The Cat Lady has stated that she will only be happy living with us as she feels she will always be victimised in a society that has shunned her.

Be assured we are doing our utmost to help her in the meantime although the situation is extremely difficult. We are pleased that a top Human Rights Lawyer is now involved in the case. However, we urgently require funds to enable us to continue helping this desperate lady.

Please continue to support the Cat Lady of Sri Lanka, having given so much herself, surely we can help give her a future living in safety with her children and animals.

Take care, Paul.

Cat carnage in posh Makati village draws flak

MANILA, Philippines. An animal welfare group has asked the National Bureau of Investigation to look into the slaughter of 29 kittens and cats which occurred a week before Christmas in an upscale village in Makati City.

Republic Act 8485, otherwise known as the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, makes it unlawful for any person to torture or kill an animal like dogs, cats and horses or neglect to provide care, sustenance or shelter, said Nancy H. Cu Unjieng, president of the Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (Cara) Philippines.

In a letter sent on Dec. 26, 2007 to NBI director Nestor M. Mantaring Cu Unjieng wrote: On Dec. 16, an unidentified individual, using an air gun with lead pellets, shot 29 kittens and cats in two holding cages at the back of the gym of the Dasmari as Village Association along Calumpang Street.

The cats were all under 6-months-old, well-cared for and were not disturbing anyone. They were up for adoption and under the care of Cara which has been helping the Dasmari as Village Association address its stray cat population problem through a program called Catch, Neuter and Release. The program is four years old but this is the first time the cats were harmed, Cu Unjieng told the Inquirer last week.

Recalling the brutal killing, she said: Early Sunday morning, (Dec. 16), a security guard called us at home and told us what happened. We immediately went to the holding area and we saw blood splattered on the cages and on the walls. The cats were either dead or dying. It was a horrible sight! We called our vet, Dr. Nielsen Donato of Vets in Practice and he came quickly.. But he was only able to save 15 cats.

In her letter to the NBI, Cu Unjieng wrote: After the carnage, three cats died from head wounds, 11 were seriously injured and euthanized by our veterinarian, eight underwent surgery to remove embedded pellets and seven were grazed by pellets.

The village security team investigated the incident but found no witnesses who saw or heard any shots fired that night. They have no leads as to the identity of the cat killers.

Which is why I am appealing to the NBI to conduct its own investigation to expose the owner and user of the air gun. The expertise of the NBI is crucial at this point, Cu Unjieng said in her letter. There is a person living in this gated village who is dangerous. If he can kill helpless cats in the holding area near the park, he may start shooting at children who are playing in the park.

Victoria P. Celdran, president of the Dasmari as Village Association, sent a circular on Dec. 19 to residents asking for information leading to the identification of the owner and user of the air gun. He may be in our midst. If he can kill helpless cats at the back of the gym, near our park, he may start shooting at humans later with a gun other than that which uses compressed air and pellets, she wrote in the circular.

We are very, very upset. The kittens were in cages! Celdran told the Inquirer. The person who did this must have emotional problems. First he shoots cats, then what children? We also want to stress that Dasma is not a practice ground for air guns.

Celdran said they would not stop the investigations until the culprit is caught. The village association will file a case against him. He committed a crime under the Animal Welfare Act and he could go to jail.

Cara is also working with the Forbes Park community, the Manila Golf & Country Club and soon, the Bel-Air Village Association in dealing with their stray cat population problem.

Many communities, both here and abroad, have adopted the catch, neuter and release program, Cu Unjieng said. Apart from avoiding unwanted kittens by fixing these animals, other benefits are less cat fights and mating calls and free and efficient rodent control, she added.

Cara has also opened a spay/neuter clinic at the Carson Bldg., Orense corner Del Carmen Streets, Guadalupe Nuevo in Makati City. Starting Jan. 14, clinic hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays by appointment. For more information, call 882-5323 (telefax) and 0910-7297026 (mobile).

Binay orders probe of feline massacre in Dasma
By Julie M. Aurelio
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines -- Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay ordered the police on Saturday to investigate last month's gruesome slaughter of 29 kittens and cats in a posh, gated village.

Police chief Superintendent Gilbert Cruz tasked a team of investigators to track down the cat killers, who peppered the furry creatures with air gun pellets.

"Our investigators are now coordinating with Barangay (village) Dasmari as officials and the Dasmari as Village Association (DVA) for any leads," Cruz said.

Binay said the perpetrators should be immediately arrested because they pose a threat to the security of animals, residents, and visitors of Dasmari as Village.

"I have ordered the police to arrest those responsible as soon as possible. The suspects have violated a national law and a city ordinance on animal welfare," Binay said.

Republic Act 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 makes it unlawful for any person to torture or kill animals such as dogs, cats, and horses or neglect to provide them with care, sustenance, or shelter.

"Whoever did this does not seem to have a sound mind and may cause harm to people the next time," Binay added.

On December 16, 2007, several cats were shot with air guns. The 29 cats were inside two holding cages at the back of the DVA gym.

The felines, which were up for adoption, were under the care of the Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (Cara) Philippines, which is helping the DVA address the problem of stray cats in the subdivision.

[The following information comes from On Loving Animals blog:

"The Village management questioned two individuals who are caretakers in the neighborhood. They rest and sleep in a building right next to the cages that held the cats (29, according to the report). When questioned, they didn't give a credible response. So, for now, they are considered persons of interest by the Makati police ( Makati is the city in which the subdivision is located). They are not yet naming names until the investigation is further developed. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is looking into the pellets that were recovered from the dead cats, and they will try to find out what kind of guns the pellets came from. The NBI is also investigating who came in and out of the village the day the cats were murdered. Nancy Cu Unjieng, President of Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) was interviewed, and she argued that the killing is a serious violation of the Animal Welfare Act and that a resolution is required."

today i received a call from dasma security past 7am that 3 kittens were found dead in the dasma cage. the other kittens were bleeding and blood covered the floor and walls of the cages.

dasma security informed me that the kittens were shot by an air gun. drs nielsen and riza arrived to confirm that the kittens were shot and recovered several pellets as evidence. 3 kittens were found dead, 11 were euthanized because of several pellet wounds each, 6 were taken to the clinic for xray and 8 were still ok- although some had pellet grazes on their bodies.

this is a horrific cruelty inflicted on these poor kittens who were being cared for daily in their cages and not a disturbance to anyone!

backie celdran has ordered a complete investigation of this massacre. there are one or more sick individuals responsible for this cruelty.

medical reports conclude that cruelty that starts with animals has the strong possibility of eventually escalating to humans. the person/persons responsible for this crime should be apprehended. they are in the dasma village equipped with air pistols.

thank you for your concern and time. nancy

33 Reasons Vivisection is Pointless

E-Mail Drucken PDF
1) Less than 2% of human illnesses (1.16%) are ever seen in animals.

(2) According to the former scientific executive of Huntingdon Life Sciences, animal tests and human results agree only "5%-25% of the time." (Flipping a coin would be more accurate.)

(3) 95% of drugs passed by animal tests are immediately discarded as useless or dangerous to humans.

(4) At least 50 drugs on the market cause cancer in laboratory animals. They are allowed because it is admitted the animal tests are not relevant.

(5) Procter & Gamble used an artificial musk despite it failing the animal tests, i.e., causing tumors in mice. They said the animal test results were "of little relevance for humans."

(6) When asked if they agreed that animal experiments can be misleading "because of anatomical and physiological differences between animals and humans," 88% of doctors agreed.

(7) Rats are only 37% effective in identifying what causes cancer to humans. (Again, flipping a coin would be more accurate.)

(8) Rodents are the animals almost always used in cancer research. They never get carcinomas, the human form of cancer, which affects membranes (e.g lung cancer). Their sarcomas affect bone and connecting tissue: the two cannot be compared.

(9) Up to 90% of animal test results are discarded as they are inapplicable to man.

(10) The results from animal experiments can be altered by factors such as diet and bedding. Bedding has been identified as giving cancer rates of over 90% and almost nil in the same strain of mice at different locations.

(11) Sex differences among laboratory animals can cause contradictory results. This does not correspond with humans.

(12) 9% of anaesthetized animals, intended to recover, die.

(13) An estimated 83% of substances are metabolized by rats in a different way to humans.

(14) Attempts to sue the manufacturers of the drug Surgam failed due to the testimony of medical experts that "data from animals could not be extrapolated safely to patients."

(15) Lemon juice is a deadly poison, but arsenic, hemlock and botulin are safe according to animal tests.

(16) Genetically modified animals are not models for human illness. The mdx mouse is supposed to represent muscular dystrophy, but the muscles regenerate without treatment.

(17) 88% of stillbirths are caused by drugs which are passed as being safe in animal tests, according to a study in Germany.

(18) 61% of birth defects are caused by drugs passed safe in animal tests, according to the same study. Defect rates are 200 times post-war levels.

(19) One in six patients in hospital are there because of a treatment they have taken.

(20) In America, 100,000 deaths a year are attributed to medical treatment. In one year 1.5 million people were hospitalized by medical treatment.

(21) A World Health Organization study showed children were 14 times more likely to develop measles if they had been vaccinated.

(22) 40% of patients suffer side effects as a result of prescription treatment.

(23) Over 200,000 medicines have been released, most of which are now withdrawn. According to the World Health Organization, only 240 are "essential."

(24) A German doctors' congress concluded that 6% of fatal illnesses and 25% of organic illness are caused by medicines. All have been animal-tested.

(25) The lifesaving operation for ectopic pregnancies was delayed 40 years due to vivisection.

(26) According to the Royal Commission into vivisection (1912), "The discovery of anaesthetics owes nothing to experiments on animals." The great Dr Hadwen noted that "had animal experiments been relied upon...humanity would have been robbed of this great blessing of anaesthesia." The vivisector Halsey described the discovery of Fluroxene as "one of the most dramatic examples of misleading evidence from animal data."

(27) Aspirin fails animal tests, as does digitalis (a heart drug), cancer treatments, insulin (causes animal birth defects), penicillin, and other safe medicines. They would have been banned if vivisection were heeded.

(28) In the court case when the manufacturers of Thalidomide were being tried, they were acquitted after numerous experts agreed that animal tests could not be relied on for human medicine.

(29) Blood transfusions were delayed 200 years by animal studies, corneal transplants were delayed 90 years.

(30) Despite many Nobel prizes being awarded to vivisectors, only 45% agree that animal experiments are crucial.

(31) At least 450 methods exist with which we can replace animal experiments.

(32) At least thirty-three animals die in laboratories each second worldwide; in the UK, one every four seconds.

(33) The Director of Research Defense Society, (which exists to defend vivisection) was asked if medical progress could have been achieved without animal use. His written reply was "I am sure it could be."

Neutering program for stray cats launched in Taipei City (Taiwan)

Neutering program for stray cats launched in Taipei City
Taipei, Jan. 17

(CNA) The Taipei city government and several animal protection groups launched a sterilization program for stray cats Thursday in a bid to reduce the number of feral animals in Taiwan's largest city.

Representatives from the Animal Protection Association of the Republic of China, the Taipei Stray Cats Protection Association and a group of city councilors announced the program in a news conference at the Taipei city council.

"Each member of the public should help sterilize one stray cat," animal conservationists, municipal officials ad councilors urged, stressing the importance of treating stray animals in a humanitarian

One of them also displayed how to use a specially designed trap to catch stray cats in order to sterilize them and eventually release them.

The Taipei city government will this year earmark budgets for a trap, neuter, release program for some 500 stray cats.

According to ROC Animal Protection Association Chairman Chen Shei-saint, his association will provide more traps to the public and groups dedicated to animal protection free of charge if the program

Currently, only 30 traps are officially available, association workers claimed.

MANAGING MOGGIES: The Taipei Stray Cat Protection Association neutered almost 500 cats last year and it is hoping to double that this year
By Angelica Oung
Friday, Jan 18, 2008, Page 2

Animal welfare organizations yesterday held a press conference calling on Taipei residents to help capture stray cats so they can be neutered, a process approved by the Taipei Municipal Institute for Animal Health (TMIAH).

The Taipei Stray Cat Protection Association (Taipei SCPA) and The Animal Protection Association of the ROC (APA) said they would lend special cages to the public that can be used to trap any stray cats in their neighborhood. The associations would then take the felines away to be neutered before returning the animals in a procedure known as Trap, Neuter and Release.

The two organizations are calling on the public to help in their efforts because trapping cats can be a time-consuming activity and neither the TMIAH nor animal welfare societies have the manpower to trap as many cats as they would like.

Taipei's stray dog problem usually receives more attention from the public because dogs are more visible, said Yen I-feng, director of the TMIAH. Cats, meanwhile, are less visible because they tend to be nocturnal.

"However, they still cause nuisance to many residents by making noise and going through trash," Yen said.

Yen said that there could be "hundreds of thousands" of stray cats in Taipei. The real number is hard to estimate.

"Unfortunately, the resources the government can devote to this cause are limited," Yen said. "Therefore, we hope that non-governmental organizations and the public can pitch in and improve the situation."

The Taipei SCPA neutered almost 500 cats last year. With the help of the public, they hope to double that number this year, said the association's secretary-general Huang Ching-yi.

"It is not expensive to neuter cats and we have found vets who will help us do it at a discount," Huang said. "Manpower is what is lacking. So we are looking to train and recruit members of the public to help us catch cats for neutering."

Cats already neutered can be identified by a notch cut in their ear.

Those wishing to participate in the program can call the APA at 02-2704-0809.
